Day trips from Taipei

Posted by: Josh and Liz, 16 January 2026

If you never leave the city of Taipei, you can still have a pretty good time there.

But with good public transport links to scenic areas and smaller towns along Taiwan's North Coast, you might enjoy taking time to do one or two of the trips below. Click the headings or the pictures to read our thoughts on each place.

A river running between two banks covered in trees and what appear to be residential buildings

Best known for its relaxing hot baths, Wulai also offers an easy walk or scenic train ride to view a waterfall, and a museum dedicated to the history of the Atayal people.

The outside of Amei Tea House, covered in lanterns and traditional decorations. A crowd of tourists is gathered outside

Famous for its tea houses and its historic Old Street, some will love Jioufen's scenic views and bustling atmosphere while others might feel very differently.

Read our guide to find out why Liz enjoyed her visit and why I was disappointed by it.

A cat curled up on a roof with one paw resting over its face

A former mining town which slowly became a sanctuary for cats when a local resident started caring for strays left behind as residents moved away.

With beautiful views and a thoughtful mining museum, we loved our morning here.

A river with paths to either side, and tall buildings visible in the background to the right

A big and walkable city on Taiwan's West coast, and the birthplace of bubble tea, Taichung is worth considering for a long stay.

For those with less time to spare, read our guide for an idea of how to spend one day exploring Taichung.
